[Video] The Magnetic Fields – “Andrew in Drag” (The Shins Cover)

Posted by

Triple J, the Australian radio station that brings you tons of Indie / Alternative coverage has a new covers show called Like a Version. Recently, The Shins stopped by the show to cover the humorous, but slightly depressing tale of “Andrew In Drag” by the Magnetic Fields.

Stephen Merritt, the lead singer of The Magnetic Fields and the person who wrote this song was a homosexual himself. Commonly switching gender roles in his lyrics, “Andrew in Drag” is a story about a heterosexual man who falls in love with best friend while dressed up in drag. Strange scenario right?

The Shins take an acoustic approach to the song using very minimal instruments. Harmonizing the the unqiue tale, I almost think it amplifies the humor of the song when listening to the lyrics. Check out the acoustic performance below, and if your curious, this is the video James Mercer was talking about when he was dressed up in drag.
